Abbott Laboratories has reached a settlement agreement to resolve a significant portion of litigation alleging that its cow's milk-based Similac formula products increase the risk of necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) in premature infants. The company will pay $670 million to resolve one case that reached trial plus claims on behalf of another 2,000 infants represented by specific law firms.

Necrotizing enterocolitis is a potentially life-threatening intestinal disease in which harmful bacteria infiltrate the intestines, causing infection and tissue death. Preterm infants are particularly vulnerable because their gastrointestinal systems are underdeveloped. Plaintiffs allege that Abbott and competitor Mead Johnson failed to adequately warn consumers and the medical community about the increased NEC risk associated with their specialized cow's milk-based formula products.

While this settlement resolves a portion of the litigation, approximately 12,700 additional infant NEC claims remain pending. The Similac and Enfamil cases are being pursued as part of broader mass tort litigation, with trials against competing manufacturers continuing.
